Premium Uji Matcha from Kyoto, Japan

Chiyo Mukashi (千代昔) is a premium Japanese matcha produced by Shogyokuen, a historic tea producer based in Kyoto. Made from carefully selected tencha, it offers a rich umami character, smooth texture, and natural sweetness with a satisfying depth.

Its full-bodied profile makes it an excellent choice for traditional matcha preparation, whether enjoyed as usucha or koicha.

    Flavor Profile

Rich, savory umami leads into a smooth, creamy body with fresh vegetal depth and subtle nuttiness. Gentle natural sweetness balances the intensity of the tea, creating a full-bodied matcha with a long, clean finish.

    A Premium Uji Matcha

Chiyo Mukashi is part of Shogyokuen's higher-grade matcha selection. Its substantial body and pronounced umami give it a more concentrated character, while its smooth texture keeps the cup balanced and enjoyable.

The tea is made using a blend of Samidori and Uji Hikari, two cultivars associated with high-quality tea production in Kyoto.

    Best For

Chiyo Mukashi is well suited to:

    • Usucha (thin tea)
    • Koicha (thick tea)
    • Traditional matcha preparation

Its rich flavor and substantial body make it particularly versatile, working well both as traditionally prepared tea and in milk-based drinks.

    How to Prepare Chiyo Mukashi

    Usucha (Thin Tea)

    You will need:

    • 1.5–2g matcha
    • 60–70ml water
    • Water at 75–80°C / 167–176°F
    • Bamboo whisk (chasen)
    • Matcha bowl (chawan)
    • Sifter

    Steps:

    1. Sift the matcha into a warmed chawan.
    2. Add the hot water.
    3. Whisk briskly in a W or M motion until a fine layer of froth forms.
    4. Enjoy immediately.

    Koicha (Thick Tea)

    You will need:

    • 3–4g matcha
    • 30–40ml water
    • Water at 70–75°C / 158–167°F

Sift the matcha into the bowl. Gradually add the water and knead slowly with the whisk until thick and smooth. Koicha should have a dense, concentrated texture rather than a frothy surface.
