How to Prepare Ichigo Ichie Matcha (Koicha & Usucha Styles)

Usucha (Thin Tea)

You will need:

  • 1.5–2g matcha (about 1 teaspoon)

  • 60–70 ml (2–2.5 oz) of hot water (75–80°C / 167–176°F)

  • Bamboo whisk (chasen), matcha bowl (chawan), sifter

Steps:

  1. Sift the matcha into your bowl.

  2. Warm the bowl and whisk, then discard the water and dry the bowl.

  3. Add matcha and pour in hot water.

  4. Whisk quickly in a zigzag motion until frothy.

  5. Enjoy immediately for optimal flavor and aroma.

Koicha (Thick Tea)

You will need:

  • 3–4g matcha (about 2 teaspoons)

  • 30–40 ml (1–1.5 oz) of hot water (70–75°C / 158–167°F)

Steps:

  1. Sift matcha into the bowl.

  2. Add a small amount of hot water gradually.
