Uji Matcha Tea for Usucha (Thin Tea)
Origin: Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
This bold yet smooth matcha offers a delicate balance of fresh, tender green flavors, complemented by a hint of astringency and a touch of creaminess. For optimal taste, use water at 80-85°C, as lower temperatures bring out more astringent notes.
How to Prepare
For Usucha (Thin Tea):
- Place 2g (0.4 US tsp, 1 teaspoon, or 2 chashaku scoops) of matcha powder into a tea bowl.
- Pour 70 ml (2.4 fl oz) of 80°C (176°F) water over the matcha.
- Whisk with a chasen (tea whisk) until frothy.
For Koicha (Thick Tea):
- Place 4g (0.8 US tsp, 2 teaspoons, or 4 chashaku scoops) of matcha powder into a tea bowl.
- Pour 30 ml (1 fl oz) of 80°C (176°F) water over the matcha.
- Gently knead with the chasen until all lumps are dissolved.
Additional Tips:
- Optional: Warm the tea bowl with hot water before preparing, and dry it with a cloth to create the perfect temperature for a fragrant, delicious matcha.
- Recommended: Sift the matcha through a fine strainer before use to avoid clumping.
- Best Served Fresh: Drink the matcha immediately after preparation to avoid the bitterness that increases as it cools.
- Freshness Matters: To enjoy the full flavor, consume the matcha within a month of opening.
