Wako Matcha – A Harmony of Light and Flavor
Wako 和光 (“Light of Peace”) is a premium matcha from Marukyu Koyamaen, one of Kyoto’s most renowned tea producers. Specially recommended for Usucha (thin tea), Wako offers a refreshing aroma, smooth texture, and light, creamy sweetness—never bitter, unlike many commercial matchas.
Personally approved by the Grandmaster of Urasenke, the leading school of the Japanese tea ceremony, this matcha is crafted from the finest shade-grown leaves, similar to Gyokuro. Fresh batches are stone-milled monthly, preserving its vibrant color, delicate umami, and rich antioxidants.
How to Prepare Usucha (Thin Tea):
- Sift 2g (about 1 tsp) of Wako matcha into a tea bowl (chawan).
- Add 70-80ml (2.5-3 oz) of hot water (around 80°C / 175°F).
- Whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk (chasen) in a “W” motion until a smooth, frothy layer forms.
- Enjoy immediately, pairing it with your favorite Japanese sweets (wagashi) for a perfect balance of flavors.
