Yuzamashi (320cc Water Cooling Vessel)
A yuzamashi is a traditional Japanese teaware item used to cool down boiling water before pouring it over tea leaves in a teapot (kyusu). By first transferring hot water into a yuzamashi, the temperature is gently lowered to the ideal range for brewing. It also adds a graceful touch to the tea-serving experience.
Why use a Yuzamashi?
-
Brings out the best flavor: Water that is too hot can make tea taste overly bitter or astringent. Cooling it first allows the natural sweetness and aroma of the tea to shine.
-
Perfect for different teas: Each transfer lowers the water temperature, making it easy to brew sencha, gyokuro, or other delicate teas at just the right heat.
-
Matcha-friendly: A yuzamashi can also be used to cool water before preparing matcha, helping prevent bitterness and ensuring a smooth, balanced taste.
-
Safe and thoughtful: Handling water in stages is both practical and elegant.
How to use it
-
Pour freshly boiled water into the yuzamashi.
-
Transfer the cooled water into a teacup or directly into the teapot with tea leaves.
-
For matcha, pour the cooled water from the yuzamashi into your chawan before whisking.
-
Adjust transfers as needed to reach the ideal brewing temperature.
