How to Prepare Matcha (Usucha – Thin Matcha)

  1. Warm and purify your bowl (chawan): Swirl a little hot water in it; discard the water and dry.

  2. Sift the matcha: Use ~1 teaspoon (about 1.5–2 g) of matcha (roughly ½ to ¾ teaspoon) into the bowl to ensure a silky texture.

  3. Add water: Pour in about 60–70 ml of water at approximately 75–80 °C (167–176 °F)—boiling water can scorch the delicate flavors.

  4. Whisk: Using a bamboo whisk (chasen), whisk briskly in a “W” or “M” motion until it becomes frothy with fine bubbles and vibrant green.

  5. Enjoy immediately: Sip directly from the bowl, and inhale the aroma between sips.
